Posted on June 11th, 2010

Yummy!!! Not many people say this when they eat the food that is served in flights, however some large carriers do serve meals which are good enough to pass the tasty test. Food served on board depend on the time the journey takes off, the places of origin and destination, the meals that fall between the journey, the class of the airplane and many more such criteria. Some low cost airlines do not serve any food on board and you have to carry your own if your daily meal falls between the times of the journey. Let's see what the various major airlines serve for various meals on board their aircraft. This will give you an idea of what to do with meals when you are traveling by an airplane the next time.

Breakfast- The most important meal of the day and should be healthy as well. Breakfast is of various styles in various countries, now airlines cannot follow all breakfast types for each of its passengers individually hence you may have a choice of some basic styles.

The continental breakfast which non-vegetarians are served includes beacon and eggs, pancakes and sauce, peanut butter and bread. There may be a choice in the bread, like whole wheat bread, ginger bread, etc. An Asian breakfast may include dosas and idlis, curd rice and pickle and may be tea and coffee. For people who feel the food is bland, extra salt and pepper sachets are provided along with the meal.

Long haul air-flights may include a lunch and a dinner during the flight hence a complete plan of what is to be served for breakfast lunch and dinner is decided before hand. A breakfast would include bread sandwiches with beacon, eggs, fruits and fruit juices. Vegetarian breakfast would include vegetarian salad sandwiches, pancakes and juices.

Lunches- Many airlines have a complete well thought lunch for its passengers. The first class and business class passengers get a 3-4 course gourmet meal which is specially prepared for them.

Dinner is a lighter however may comprise of similar kind of dishes. Dinner is served after asking the passengers for how much does he require and a choice of vegetarian and non-vegetarian again.

The dinner is pretty much the same like in lunch however a little lighter and bland in taste so that digestion is not given a challenge. The taste of food in most airlines is not so spicy and quite bland. The reason being that if more pungent food is served some other passengers who don't eat pungent food may not like it.

The beverages served on board differ from country to country. European Air-flights will have more of Whiskey and Vodka in non-alcoholic drinks. Asian flights have more of Rum and Beer served. Juices and aerated drinks are available for everybody on board. Water is usually mineral water and can be asked for anytime of the flight. The flight attendants and crew are always at the passenger's service.
